Good news! Access to high-speed internet is finally coming to rural areas in the Central Valley! New fiber optic cable is being laid along 83.2 miles of roadway between Los Baños and Fresno, one of the first projects named by Governor Newsom to bridge the digital divide.
Democrats in the state and federal government are serious about governing, and serious about making government work for rural Californians. You can draw a direct line from President Joe Biden (Democrat) to Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat) and our majorities in the State Legislature (Democrat) directing $6 billion to deliver on the promise of bringing access to the internet to where it is needed the most in California.
Democrats are bringing affordable internet access to rural counties throughout California.
Thanks to our legislation, California is going to build, own, and operate the internet infrastructure that the monopolies won’t. These maps show the proposed statewide system network as of April 2022. The entire network must be completed by December 2026.
We Democrats are enormously proud of this accomplishment. It will be transformative for health, safety, work, and education:
- Studies show that health outcomes are far better in communities that have access to telemedicine.
- In case of a natural disaster such as fire, flood, or earthquake, internet access means getting news, evacuation bulletins, and being able to contact emergency services when the phones are down.
- Many new, well-paying jobs require the ability to work remotely while collaborating with colleagues and reporting or accessing data.
- Never again do we want to see kids having to do their homework in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant because it is the only place they can get connected.
Access also means affordability. One of the key resources we deliver is the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) to help families afford the cost of reliable Internet service. The program provides:
- A discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households.
- A high-speed internet plan for no more than $30 per month, delivering internet access at no cost for eligible households.
- A one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer or tablet.
