CADEM and the California Legislative Jewish Caucus Partner to Launch ‘Passover as a Call to Justice’ Haggadah

SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Democratic Party (CADEM), the nation’s largest state Democratic Party representing more than 10 million Democrats, today announced its partnership with the California Legislative Jewish Caucus to release the “Passover as a Call to Justice” Haggadah. As Passover nears, CADEM is joining California’s diverse communities in recognizing the contributions of the Jewish community and our ongoing commitment to ensure that we continue to uplift all communities.

“The California Legislative Jewish Caucus is proud to partner with the California Democratic Party to celebrate Passover,” stated Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino), Co-Chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus. “Passover is a holiday full of ritual and symbolism meant to deepen our empathy, reminding us that we were once slaves – powerless, marginalized, and without basic rights or freedoms. As Democrats, we translate this empathy into action by fighting everyday for the poor and for those who have suffered oppression and discrimination,” continued Assemblymember Gabriel.

“CADEM is honored to work with the California Legislative Jewish Caucus as we recognize the rich traditions of this holiday,” stated CADEM Vice Chair Betty Yee. “I am mindful of Passover as an observance that is both religious and cultural for the Jewish community. As such, the Jewish story of the Exodus contains many themes that speak universally to the oppression experienced beyond the Israelites and the Jewish community. As CADEM recognizes Passover, we renew our commitment to do the work to reach equity and justice for all.”

The California Legislative Jewish Caucus serves as a voice for the Jewish Community in the State Capitol. The Caucus is co-chaired by Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino) and Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), with Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) serving as the Vice Chair. The 18 member caucus works alongside community partners and allies – both within and outside the Jewish community – to advance Jewish community priorities and uplift vulnerable Californians of all faiths and backgrounds.

Passover is the Jewish Festival of Freedom and celebrates the exodus of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover runs from the evening of Wednesday, April 5, 2023 through the evening of Thursday, April 13, 2023.
