California Democrats Unite to Defend Democracy, Counter Trump’s Power Grab
SACRAMENTO – Today, the California Democratic Party (CADEM) voted to officially endorse the Election Rigging Response Act, Governor Gavin Newsom and California Democrats proposed statewide ballot measure designed to counter efforts by President Donald Trump and Texas Republicans to rig the 2026 election.
Trump and Texas Republicans are making an unprecedented power grab by manipulating district boundaries to steal congressional seats before voting even begins. Other GOP-controlled states are preparing to follow suit. California won’t sit on the sidelines while Republicans try to rig the system—we’re fighting back to protect our democracy.
The Election Rigging Response Act would:
- Authorize California to adjust congressional districts in response to partisan gerrymanders in Texas and other GOP states, ensuring balance at the national level.
- Affirm California’s commitment to national redistricting reform – retaining California’s Citizen Redistricting Commission for the regular redistricting after the 2030 census and declaring it state policy to support the use of fair, nonpartisan redistricting commissions nationwide.
- Preserve California’s current commission drawn maps if Texas and other states retain their current maps.
“Trump knows he can’t win fair and square so he wants to stack the deck. But we refuse to play a rigged game of Texas Hold ‘Em here in California,” said CADEM Chair Rusty Hicks. “We’re fighting back and defending democracy from a wannabe dictator. Because we can’t just sit on the sidelines while MAGA Republicans silence millions of voters before they even make it to the ballot box. It’s time to step up, fight back and show the Nation what it means to be California Strong.”
The California Democratic Party (CADEM) is the nation’s largest state Democratic Party representing 10 million Democrats.
