CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATIC PARTY CELEBRATES KEY VICTORIES DESPITE NATIONAL HEADWINDS

CADEM Set Up Strategic Regional Campaign Operations to Make Gains in U.S. House of Representatives; Protect Supermajority in State Legislature

SACRAMENTO, CA — In the 2024 election cycle, California Democrats focused on securing pivotal congressional seats in the United States House of Representatives while protecting supermajorities in the State Legislature. Through strategic year-round organizing, coalition building and collective effort, the party achieved significant success, winning four out of six targeted races, including three critical Red-to-Blue seat flips.

“The Congressional and legislative victories that California Democrats secured in competitive races throughout our state were not an accident – they were a result of years of hard work and planning,” said CADEM Chair Rusty Hicks. “The California Democratic Party operationalized voter outreach efforts that made a big difference in tight races, and because of our preparation and adherence to our values, California Democrats are the last stronghold to come through the political storm of 2024 with victories.”

Currently, Democrats hold 146 of 186 federal and state seats in California, representing a nearly 80% majority of these officeholders.

The Democratic candidates who emerged victorious in competitive Congressional districts are:

    •   Adam Gray in the 13th Congressional District, defeating incumbent Republican Rep. John Duarte

    •   George Whitesides in the 27th Congressional District, securing a win over incumbent Republican Mike Garcia

    •   Derek Tran in the 45th Congressional District, beating Republican Michelle Steel

    •   Dave Min in the 47th Congressional District, defeating Republican incumbent Scott Baugh

In addition to these congressional victories, California Democrats maintained robust supermajorities in the State Legislature, achieving the highest number of women legislators in the state’s history.

Voters also approved key ballot measures that align with Democratic priorities, including:

    •    Proposition 2: School Bonds

    •    Proposition 3: Affirming the right to marry and repealing Proposition 8

    •    Proposition 4: Authorizing bonds for parks, environment, energy, and water projects

    •   Proposition 35: Historic investment in Medi-Cal, serving 15 million Californians

California Democrats accomplished all of this despite facing severe national headwinds.
“With Republicans now controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress, California stands at the forefront to protect our fundamental values and rights,” added Hicks. “The California Democratic Party remains steadfast in its dedication to upholding our values and ensuring that the state continues to lead in promoting equality, justice, and opportunity for all.”
