NO on Prop 39

CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATS STAND UNITED AGAINST PROP 39:

  • The California Democratic Party is proud to stand alongside our Democratic leaders in the fight to defeat Proposition 39. Prop 39 rewrites voting rules to keep Trump and his cronies in power and to make it harder for you to vote.
  • California Democrats have proven that when we stand together and organize, we win. We proved that with Proposition 50, delivering an overwhelming victory, showing Donald Trump that when he tries to rig our democracy, California fights back and wins. Now we’re putting that same energy into defeating Trump’s latest dirty trick – Prop 39.
  • Last year, Trump tried to rig the maps. Now, with Prop 39, he’s trying to rig the rules around voting itself. And we all know who bears the brunt when Trump tries to deny voters access to the ballot box: Women, people of color, seniors, young people, and working Californians.
  • The California Democratic Party joins Secretary Xavier Becerra, US Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, Pro Tem Monique Limón, Speaker Robert Rivas, Rep. Pete Aguilar, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, California Federation of Labor Unions, California Teachers Association, Planned Parenthood CA, California Nurses Association, AFSCME California, SEIU California State Council, California Federation of Teachers, California School Employees Association, ACLU California Action, UCLA Voting Rights Project, California Common Cause, Equality California, League of Women Voters and other leaders, labor unions and voting rights organizations across California in endorsing NO on Proposition 39.

BACKGROUND ON PROP 39:

  • Prop 39 is a Trump-backed attack on every Californian citizen’s right to vote in the form of a proposed Constitutional Amendment placed on the November 2026 California ballot by MAGA Republicans and billionaires.
  • Prop 39 makes voting harder, puts voters’ personal information at risk, costs taxpayers hundreds of millions, and delays election results.
  • It targets working Californians and communities of color, making it harder for citizens to perform their constitutionally granted right to vote.
  • Taxpayers would foot the bill for Prop 39, up to hundreds of millions of dollars every year in new state and county costs, just to administer Trump’s voter suppression scheme.

PROP 39 RESTRICTS VOTING RIGHTS IN CALIFORNIA:

  • Citizens who don’t supply their personal identification information would be prohibited from exercising their constitutional right to vote.
  • Prop 39 exposes voters to identity theft by requiring that voters write the last four digits of their Social Security number or other government-issued identification number on the outside of their mail-in ballot.
  • It adds new barriers for voters who mail in their ballots, meaning simple errors could lead to rejected ballots.
  • Prop 39 disproportionately blocks seniors, students, low-income voters, those with disabilities, voters of color, and those who have changed their names (including because of marriage, divorce or gender transition) from voting.
  • More than  41% of youth, age 18-24, and 1 in 4 Latino adults do not have a driver’s license that shows their current name or address. This ballot measure is designed to strip them of their voice and their vote.

PROP 39 WASTES TAXPAYER MONEY:

  • Prop 39 would waste hundred of millions in taxpayer money by:
    • Effectively re-registering more than 26 million existing voters to ask them to “designate” a personal ID number to be used for mail ballot return.
    • Creating massive changes to complex voter registration systems and increasing ongoing staff costs for elections.
    • Forcing the state to defend against litigation from voter-suppression groups pushing conspiracy theories.

CALIFORNIANS, VOTE NO ON PROP 39:

  • Voting should be secure and accessible. California Democrats reject schemes like Prop 39 that make it more difficult for eligible voters to cast a ballot or create unnecessary obstacles to participating in our democracy.
  • Defeating Prop 39 is part of CADEM’s larger mission in 2026: protecting voting rights, turning out Democratic voters, electing more Democrats to Congress and helping Democrats take back the House.
